During our camping trip we made a new friend, Mojo. While it was raining and the kids were content playing in the tent, a pup came lumbering into our site. He was sweet, friendly and had tags so we assumed his family was nearby and would be coming for him soon. Our dog, Toby loved having a canine companion and soon the two were playing happily. We asked the children not to love on him since we did not know anything about him. He was obviously good with kids and certainly some one's pet.
After dinner Mr P and the boys hiked to the bear safe trash can to take our tin foil dinner wrappings. (last camping trip Mr P and the boys had to clean up the trash they tied in a tree -it was an excellent lesson- and they were able to see bear tracks!-boys love that kind of stuff!) They took Mojo with them searching out his family. No one knew the dog and he was incredibly happy to be with us. In fact he slept right outside our tent.
The next morning when it was time to leave we began to be concerned. We all guessed as to his situation. Perhaps his family was out hiking, and during the storm hurriedly packed up for home? Maybe they will be back today to pick him up? Upon leaving he settled down to one of Toby's bones and seemed not to care. I thought maybe he'd been through all of this before.
The road up to this camp site is recommended for four wheel drive vehicles only because it is so rocky and rough. We had to drive slowly down the mountain. Mojo followed us for over a mile. Around every curve we'd hear, "Mom!, Dad! He's still following us!" We stopped the truck and got the number off of his collar so we could call once we were back in cell phone range. My boys tried to convince us they could hold him in their laps on the way home. Mr P checked the map and discovered his town was only a few miles away from our camp site. This made us feel better about the fact that we could not take him. Mr P also did not want to put him in the truck with such close proximity between the dog and the children.
We called and let the family know where their Mojo was, hopefully he is home with them reminiscing about his time with the Patterson's. That is the prayer my children have prayed.
*I did not get a picture of Mojo-this is Toby.
Dear God,
Thank you for the many animals that are under our care. They are a blessing and a gift. May all lost pets be reunited with their families. Thank you for the opportunity to welcome a wandering pup. It was truly a blessing to us. In Jesus Name, Amen.

What a great story! And you guys were so great with everything you did. This story could have gone a number of other ways, but this was a nice story all around.
So many learning opportunities for your kids in such a brief encounter. I'm sure they'll remember this story and share it with their kids.
It's hard for kids (even really big kids) not to love on a dog like that--it's such a natural thing. Even though you all knew you couldn't keep him, I'm guessing you had to hold back a twinge of sadness anyway. I hope that as Mojo is reminiscing about his time with you that you all might be reminiscing about your time with him.
Sweet sweet! Glad you were able to call MoJo's owners. Hope they are blessedly reunited right now.
What a nice story...unfortunately, I could barely get past the "Bear Tracks" part. AGAIN, I am grateful for my home, my tv, my AC, my bed and ESPECIALLY that there are NO bear tracks at my house.
