Anyone who knows me well knows I love to sleep. Often I dream of sleep while I am awake! I think this all started during my first job after graduation. I worked the night shift 7PM to 7AM. I did not think I ever had, or even could, stay up all night, but I did for almost a year before being promoted to evening shift. I also learned that I could sleep all day too!
Since having children I do not have such luxurious sleep habits. I go to bed late and get up early, longing for my children to want a nap. While having lunch with a friend today we looked over at a nearby table and saw a baby. We oohhed and ahhed. My friend felt secure, in that her tither is full(her family is complete). My comment was only about how a baby would further impede my hope for sleep.
While in study today I found a disturbing or perhaps awakening verse for me. "Do not love sleep, or you will become poor, Open your eyes and you will be satisfied with food." Perhaps this was a wake up call to me from the Lord-saying, "Get up off your dairyaire; stop wishing for sleep; get your work done; go to bed early; and be sure to eat breakfast!" I think I'd better try that!
Dear Jesus,
May I seek out You out first in my life, then all else will fall perfectly into place. I thank you for dividing our day light and night hours so there is a time for work and a time for rest. Keep me focused on the tasks at hand during the day with energy and strength to fullfill them. May my rest at night leave me refreshed and rejuvinated for the day ahead!

Fellowship
Earlier today, my oldest son left for Cub Scout camp. He is so excited about camping with his friends! He was sharing with his brother all the great things he will be doing, archery, swimming, campfires, and cook outs. When we were loading him up to go my youngest son started bawling. He wanted to go too. He usually goes along on every adventure with his older brother. We reasured him that next year he can go. This upset him even more because that is a WHOLE year away.
I was mentally kicking myself because I did not plan anything special for this week for my younger son. Isn't hanging out with me enough? Thankfully one of his best buddies was free and we hosted a "camp in" (the weather man was calling for storms.) These two boys play so well together and are "camping out" in our living room!
God created us to be social beings. We were not meant to be alone. We long for fellowship or companiounship. Once this plan was in motion my middle son was happy and excited once again!
Dear God,
Thank you for opportunities for my children to miss each other when they are separated. May they never take eachother for granted. Thank you for friends who help soothe hurts and who walk along with us on our journey. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Keeping the Oath
Yesterday on chatty Kelly's blog spot http: chattykellly.blogspot.com , she encouraged everyone to dream!
Dream of anything you'd like to be -the sky is the limit! I dreamed about sky diving or maybe rock climbing. I dreamed on during part of the morning while chasing my three blessings.
Their futures are wide open! They are just beginning the journey. The world is at their feet. Sometimes they hope to be a fire fighter, police officer or a pilot. My oldest has mentioned becoming an engineer, like his daddy, working together, and living next door. My middle child has thought of becoming a veterinarian and moving to Antarctica! My youngest wants to be a Mommy, or possibly Barbie, maybe Dora. Their dreams change almost weekly. 
Tonight my boys will participate in an Eagle Scout ceremony at our church. Eagle scout is the highest honor awarded in scouting and requires years of work and service in the community. Last night as the boys practiced carrying the troupe's flags and lighting the candles I watched this honored young man's parents. Everything was to be perfect for the ceremony to honor their son's achievement. I watched as all the boys from smallest to highest rank carried out their parts seriously because they knew this was an important day in this young man's life.
This young man's dream, may have begun when he was my boys age, is now a reality. He has kept the oath to serve God and country. He has taken the task set before him seriously and has worked hard to obtain this goal. He too is at the beginning of a journey, as soon he will go on to college, and he will probably continue in a lifetime of service to others. What a proud day for his parents and a proud day for us as we watch our young boys honor a friend.
Dear God,
I am so thankful for the young role models you have placed in the lives of my children. Youth who long to serve You for a lifetime. May my son's dream a dream that includes service to You through serving others. With Your help I know they can achieve anything! In Jesus Name, Amen.

Sibling Rivalry
Tonight the boys went to the post swim meet ribbon distribution/practice. This evening was especially exciting as last night the Piranhas won their first meet of the season! I knew the boys would be excited when they returned home, because they would get their ribbons.
My middle child ran in to show me his ribbons bursting with pride and excitement! I am very proud (I can barely swim 25 meters without exhaustion) and I oohed and ahhhed in all the right places. My oldest son came in as the oohing and ahhhing was going on and announced how many more he received than his brother. My middle child sobbed, the bursting with pride feelings forgotten. We split- Mr P took our oldest , I took our middle, and we soothed wounds, expressed pride, and talked about compassion. Soon all tears were gone and apologies for hurt feelings accepted. Both boys, I hope, learned how proud we were of all of their hard work and effort this swim season with or with out ribbons.
Sibling rivalry in it's finest. I wonder if two boys who will ultimately be competing against each other at times in sports will be more of a challenge.
I asked Mr P, "Why can't our oldest just be proud of the accomplishments his younger, smaller, brother is making?"
He said because the oldest may feel acknowledging his younger brothers efforts with out boasting his own is a sign of weakness.
Maybe this is a male thing. (?)
I said, "How can we fix this?"
He said, we probably will have to help them work through it each and every time for years. I think he's right.
Our family time is a learning time within a loving environment. My two young men are learning how to channel their God given competitiveness into constructive competition. Competition that will make them better while still supporting others and especially each other.
Dear God,
Give my children compassion for mankind and also for each other. May they support and cheer each other on, even during the times they will be competing for the same prize, be it a spot on a team or a victory during a game. May they look to the greater prize-not the victory or ribbon. May this time You have placed them with us, be a time of learning how to love and support others. Equip us Lord with the knowledge, wisdom and tools to help them in the future You have planned. In Jesus Name, Amen

Live Your Life In Such A Way.......
As a third grader, I was especially tiny. In fact, I was the smallest in my class. Once a note was sent home from my teacher because I had threatened "to get" Becky Turner, who was much bigger than me. All of this drama was over a pink eraser...... I was terrified of the trouble that was sure to ensue from this letter. The whole way home on the bus I fretted. Once home, I took the note to my mom, who was folding clothes in the laundry room. I waited in the next room for my punishment which I feared was to be especially stringent. To my surprise she started laughing! Laughing to the point of tears in her eyes! I am sure she pulled it together enough to talk with me about the importance of getting along with others,(even though I do not remember that part.) Years later, she shared it was just so hysterical -me thinking I could hold my own, going up against such a "giant."
I saw this quote today in my favorite Christian book store, (we were there picking up a Larry's Silly Songs CD).
Live your life in such a way that when your feet hit the floor in the morning, Satan shudders and says, Oh No! She's awake!
Wow! Satan afraid because I am awake....because of the power of the Holy Spirit inside of me! Afraid for the things I do in my day, may seem small but could be HUGE in the grand scheme of things. Afraid- for the love I give away, might just be the love someone needs to feel in order to seek out Christ!
I have never, well except for third grade, thought of myself as a fierce warrior type that could conjour fear in anyone's heart. But with the power of God living inside us...........
Dear Jesus,
With You on our side, we need not fear anything. May we be fierce warriors for you fighting for the souls You died to save. No matter how small we may be with You behind us anything is possible. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Psalm 46:1-2a "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear."
2 Timothy 1:7 "For God di not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-disapline."
Ephesians 6:14-17 "Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
Join me in keeping our "swords" sharp as we continue to study His Word!

Happy Anniversary!
Today is our wedding anniversary! Twelve years ago we stood in front of God and our families and made a covenant to love, honor and respect each other for the rest of our lives. We practically ran down the aisle afterwards we were so excited about beginning our adventure together!
We've had lots of excitement along the way. Lots of joys, some sorrows, some difficult times but mostly good. There is no one I'd rather have spent the past twelve years with. Mr P is my best friend. These years have been the best years of my life and I know the best is still yet to come!
Tonight we are all going out to the Cheese Cake Factory. The boys were baffled that they had to wear Sunday clothes (a golf shirt, khaki shorts and sandals)- so I expressed what a special occasion this is. They were all on board once I told them we would even order dessert! We will walk around the out side mall. (I love that the kids can bounce along in front while we stroll, hold hands and gaze into each others eyes!) Later, we will pull out our wedding album and look at all of the pictures. My youngest will wonder why she was not invited to such a fun celebration!
Dear God,
Bless our marriage with long and loving years. Help us seek Your will for life, through happy days and tears. Remind us to be quick to say, I'm sorry, please forgive. Lets be friends and make today beautiful to live! We know our love will stay alive- Your Word says this is true.....If we join our hearts together and lift them up to You! In Jesus Name, Amen.
This prayer has been on our kitchen wall for our entire marriage.
These verses were read at our wedding and are read at lots of weddings to teach us about true love. I did not know then, but now know how difficult at times this can be. Perhaps our marriage is meant to shape our characters into what God has planned.

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Which Body Part Are You?
I asked my oldest about their Sunday School lesson. He said they are studying a letter Paul wrote to a church. I asked, " Which church? He said he thought it was a Catholic one. I asked, "Well what did the letter say?"
He said, "All the parts of the body are special and important. Like if your eye just up and decided to run off you would not be able to see anymore and if your nose jumped off you would not be able to smell and then if your ear popped off you would not be able to hear. That's not exactly how Paul said it but it's how I got it".
I asked what he thought this meant. Long pause, thoughtful look....
"How does this relate to the church being the body of Christ?"
He said, "That if anybody pops off we won't be able to do as much. Everybody's important." Everybody has a job to do."
I asked, "If our family represented the body of Christ what part would you be?"
Immediately he answered, " The foot."
" Why? "
" I don't know", then, "well I can run and swim fast." He went on to say that Daddy would be the head, because he's the leader. My middle son could be the eyes because he sees well with out glasses and our daughter the hand because she likes to help do their chores.
I thought more about this and decided, yes, he and all of our children could be "the feet". Through their activities; school, scouts, neighborhood play and sports they move me out into the world, out to where others need to hear the gospel.
My husband definately is the leader of our family. He, thankfully, seeks God and His will for our lives in making decisions. He also seeks council from me- teamwork is important to him.
My middle son could be our eyes. He does help us to see the world in a brighter light. Looking more to the good in every situation.
My youngest LOVES to help and her brothers gladly accept her requests to feed the dog, set the table and various other chores. I pray she can keep her servants heart attitude. So hand does fit her as well.
What part am I in our family that hopes to be good servants for Christ? Perhaps I could be the skin, holding us all together as we go about our duties.
Dear God,
I praise you in the diversity in which you made us so that everyone is equally important and everyone has a purposeful job to do. You made us individually suited for Your plans. You also made us so that we must rely on eachother and work together. Help us to realize this and shoulder our burdens, along with the burdens of others so that everyone's load will be lightened.
In Jesus Name, Amen.

Have a Coke and a Smile!
Next week is our twelfth wedding anniversary, while browsing through celebration ideas I came across a challenge: No complaining for 21 days. You commit to twenty one days of no complaining, grumbling or nagging to your spouse. To remind yourself of the challenge you are supposed to wear a bracelet or band on your wrist. I just found a pink beaded bracelet to wear. If you mess up and forget then you switch wrist and start over at day one. (this could take me a long time).
My husband is a sounding board for all of my frustrations. Why should this be? Shouldn't he be getting my best, because he is my husband. So instead of greeting him at the door with wild tales of woe, about exuberant boys and dog running through the house knocking over all the potted plants, woes of no nap, and how much house work I didn't get done; Perhaps, I can greet him with a Coke and a smile!
Dear God, Please help me to be a helper for my husband, like You designed. Keep my tounge restrained from nagging, complaining, and grumbling. May the words I use be encouraging, uplifting; only helpful. Thank you for the blessings You have bestowed on our marriage. In Jesus name, Amen.
Philippians 2:14-16 "Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life-in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing."
Genesis 2:20b-21-22 "But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused ath man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. "
Proverbs 21:18 "Better to live out in the desert, than with a quarelsome and ill tempered wife."
I will let you know how it goes and if he notices!
The positive nickels are working! Rare days they even get the whole dollar! They are saving their monies.
The gratitude journal is still in development. As my boys do not typically like to write they are writing once or twice a week. It will be fun to read back over all of them mabe at Thanksgiving! It also fulfills their teachers reccommendation to keep them writing this summer!

May I Praise You In the Storm
I recently read a really good book, Mistaken Identity by the Van Ryn and Cerak families. It is a true story about two college students who were in a horrific car accident and their identities were switched. One girl survived the crash. One did not.

Life is hard, God never promised it would be easy, (in fact He tells us life will be more difficult because we believe in Him), and for many it is incredibly difficult. God allows much heart ache. If we are able to give it to God, have Him carry us through it, then others truly see we have something amazing living inside of us...Christ.
Dear God,
You give us wonderful promises of eternal life because of our belief in Jesus, and you promise life here will be hard. Through our rough patches, may we glorify You and press on, as our lifetimes will only be a blink in the grand eternity You have prepared for us. Lord, I thank you for the role models that are, and have been in my life who have shown that relying on You will lighten the burden. My mom; my husbands mom, who is now with you dancing, the MS completely forgotten; my grandmother, who longs to come home to You, her best friend, and to see my grandfather again. Please give me the courage to say, "I will praise you in the storm" when the storms come. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Searching for God throughout the day
I do not have a traditional "quiet time" with God. Since I am confessing, I will further tell you I do not have a set time each day that I sit down to spend time with God. There are very few "quiet" moments in my house. I do, however spend many moments with God each day studying here and there, seeking Him everywhere I go. I grab what I can, when I can, and am grateful for each minute!
When the boys were babies, I could not even find a time to be alone, (not even in the rest room) much less time for serious bible study. Then, I would read to them from bible stories and pray with, and over them throughout the day. I was also blessed by a mom's bible study, where you could come, "homework" done or not, to learn and to be inspired by godly women.
Just last year I struggled with my inconsistent study habits. I was concerned I was missing out spiritually because I was not disciplined enough to devote a set time each day. I was struggling to finish preparing for the studies I was involved in, and I could not keep up with my summer computer study with my girlfriends. I was feeling like a spiritual failure.
Last summer our family went to the Christian Life Conference in Montreat N.C. Nancy Ortberg and her husband, John, were the speakers. Her husband has published many great Christian books, and he was good speaker, but Nancy really made an impact on me. She shared her experiences as a mother and how she struggled with a morning "quiet time". The expectation of this time for her was "boxing in" God in her life, compartmentalizing Him into one special time.
She learned that you can connect with God in many other ways, throughout the day! She connected with God by watching her children play at the end of an exhausting day, realizing just how much she loved them. She then heard God whisper that the love she was feeling for her children was only the tip of the iceberg of the love He has for her. As she was speaking, tears were flowing down my face. It's OK not to have a "quiet time"!!!!! I can still connect with God in other ways! Once this realization came to me, it was such an incredible relief! I began to have not so "quiet time" throughout the day. I pray, sometimes for survival, in the morning, later read a quick devotional before heading out the door. I pray, and sometimes sing a praise song or two with my youngest while we walk the dog. (If the boys are ahead of us on their bikes-I could be praying for strength to keep up!) I see God in my children, husband, friends and loved ones; or in the beauty of a mountain view or sunset. There are so many ways to connect with God all day long! And I have found because of these connections it drives me to find the time to be in His Word.

Your love for us is so amazing that I can not quite grasp how huge it really is. May I be blessed by seeing You in others around me! You are in my friendships and in my children, and in the many blessings You have given. Thank you for "invading" all the parts of my day so that I can connect with You- if only I seek You out. In Jesus Name, Amen

Boys to Men
My boys are growing into men. Not today, but gradually, moment by precious moment. Boys are naturally risk takers, my middle child even more so than my oldest. In his book, Wild at Heart, John Elderidge says that boys long to hear "You have what it takes to be a man". This is so hard for me as a Mommy-well Mom-my boys call me Mom now. My first instinct is to protect them from harm, any and all, which may or may not occur. What they need from me is to hear, "I believe in you." These words unspoken or spoken could mean the difference in fear of failure or the courage to try. Every parent wants their child to have the courage to try.
As I observe them establishing their space in the world, often times I have to hold myself back. When they were younger, it was letting them climb to the top of the slide by themselves and slide with out catching them. Now it is watching them from the shallow end, (with my youngest), as they play, Cross Pool in the deep end with the bigger boys.
By allowing them a small amount of danger they are learning about their own limits and are taking responsibility for their own actions. We may encounter a few skinned knees, and a stitch or two on this rite of passage process, but my hope is they will be strong, confident men of God.
Dear God,
Please give me wisdom in allowing the boys enough adventure and risk to give them confidence and courage, so that they may grow into the strong warriors for Christ, that You have called them to be. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Mammogram Day
Yesterday was mammogram day for my mom. She is a breast cancer survivior (4 years). It is always a red letter day because of the hold your breath anxiety that goes along with it. The news was good no sign of trouble. I am blessed with a mother whose strength and faith are secure. She knows the Lord is with her and what ever this life brings she will be alright. She comes from a long line of strong women. My grandmother has faced many troubles weathering them all knowing Jesus is her best friend and savior there is no need to fear. My great Aunt Grace also exhibited this strength in her battle with breast cancer. She fought for 2o years and now she is celebrating her victory with Jesus. My mom finds hope in that if her Aunt Grace could battle for 20 years than she can too if she has too and still have a long full life. I am blessed with many role models in faith under pressure.
Yesterday I received a email from a dear friend. She had just returned from a wonderful vacation and heard news from her mom, no daughter or son ever wants to hear. Her mom has breast cancer. Instead of drowning in her fear she was praising God. Praising God because God gave her the words her mom needed to hear along with comforting scripture to back up those words. Promises that He gives us for times such as these. She asked me to pray for her mom.
Dear God,
Please surround my friend's mom with your comfort and care. May she find hope in that You have promised you will never leave us. May she feel her burden lightened as others are lifting her up to you in prayer. Give her doctors and nurses wisdom in helping her to make treatment decisions. Be with my friend as she travels with her small children to be with her mom. Children are such a joy and a gift and offer us motivation to be well. May we be reminded that each moment is a blessing not to be taken for granted. In Jesus Name, Amen
Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strenghten you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Please pray for my friends mom, God knows the names and the circumstances. We will put this in His hand as God is good all the time.

Where's my Mojo
During our camping trip we made a new friend, Mojo. While it was raining and the kids were content playing in the tent, a pup came lumbering into our site. He was sweet, friendly and had tags so we assumed his family was nearby and would be coming for him soon. Our dog, Toby loved having a canine companion and soon the two were playing happily. We asked the children not to love on him since we did not know anything about him. He was obviously good with kids and certainly some one's pet.
After dinner Mr P and the boys hiked to the bear safe trash can to take our tin foil dinner wrappings. (last camping trip Mr P and the boys had to clean up the trash they tied in a tree -it was an excellent lesson- and they were able to see bear tracks!-boys love that kind of stuff!) They took Mojo with them searching out his family. No one knew the dog and he was incredibly happy to be with us. In fact he slept right outside our tent.
The next morning when it was time to leave we began to be concerned. We all guessed as to his situation. Perhaps his family was out hiking, and during the storm hurriedly packed up for home? Maybe they will be back today to pick him up? Upon leaving he settled down to one of Toby's bones and seemed not to care. I thought maybe he'd been through all of this before.
The road up to this camp site is recommended for four wheel drive vehicles only because it is so rocky and rough. We had to drive slowly down the mountain. Mojo followed us for over a mile. Around every curve we'd hear, "Mom!, Dad! He's still following us!" We stopped the truck and got the number off of his collar so we could call once we were back in cell phone range. My boys tried to convince us they could hold him in their laps on the way home. Mr P checked the map and discovered his town was only a few miles away from our camp site. This made us feel better about the fact that we could not take him. Mr P also did not want to put him in the truck with such close proximity between the dog and the children.
We called and let the family know where their Mojo was, hopefully he is home with them reminiscing about his time with the Patterson's. That is the prayer my children have prayed.

Dear God,
Thank you for the many animals that are under our care. They are a blessing and a gift. May all lost pets be reunited with their families. Thank you for the opportunity to welcome a wandering pup. It was truly a blessing to us. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Be Prepared...or not
Our trip was fun, with challenges, .....ups and downs. Upon our arrival it started to thunder and rain. We had just finished our lunch and had only set up one tent thus far. We sat out the rain in the truck and the storm quickly past. We set up our other tent and were ready to hike. The children found a muddy hill which was great fun to run and slide down. I was relived that the rainy day has not caused our attitudes to be cloudy. We headed to the falls.
Our youngest has not hiked much in her three years so it is up for grabs how far you actually get. She did great, a real trouper! The rain increased as did the thunder so we peeked over the falls and immediately started back. We maybe went a little over two miles. She began to wear out and said, "Daddy I can't walk anymore.....I'm drippy". Any daddy knows a drippy girl can't walk so she was carried most of the remaining distance. My middle son was thrilled as he found a snail and a salamander. He took some convincing as to why we could not take these animals back to our campsite. My oldest loves to be in the lead so he too was holding his head high. While getting closer to our campsite the rain was.. kind of pouring. I began to doubt if we should stay. Mr P assured me that he thought he could still get our dinners cooked and if not,- well we could always have Pop tarts.
I did not pack for a rainy trip. I packed for a fun clear skies trip. The myriads of things I should have packed came into my head; a deck of cards, dominoes, books, and small dolls. Oh well, I thought we'll see how this goes. I helped the children into dry clothes and secured them in the boys tent with the scraping of toys I could find in the truck: two Lego men and a storm trooper. Then I set out to help Mr P with the fire. Later I smiled as I heard giggles and a game of "I spy" going on. (I did not even tell them to do that).
The rain stopped and our fire flourished. By bedtime we were not even feeling damp. Our dinners were delicious and the kids LOVED eating s'mores and staying outside well into darkness. As we snuggled in for night time prayers I thanked God for the rain and the opportunity it gave us to work together to make the best of our time no matter the circumstances surrounding us.

To My Daddy

Daddy,
There are no words that I can say that will thank you enough for all you've done for me. You've helped to shape me into who I am. You've taught me many lessons*. Most of which I did not truly appreciate until now that I am a parent.
As an entrepreneur, you worked so hard for your young family. You sacrificed your free time and comfort to provide a nice life for us. Growing up, there was never a time I had need for anything. You worked hard so that I could go on to further my education. Many doors have easily opened because of my education. You gave me a gift I can use to provide for my family.
Thank you for the sacrifices you made for us. Sacrifices that made our lives easier, more comfortable and happy. Your hard work has shown some pretty terrific fruit in the lives of your children. You have much to be proud about.
Thank you for the attention you are giving to your health and well being. Now is a time for you to enjoy life with Momma. We all love you and need you to be around for as long as God has planned.
God chose you to be my dad. He placed me in the family of your leadership. His wisdom is perfect and many blessings have come from my beginning.

Let's Go Camping!
Today we are going camping! We are off to Crab Tree Falls to do a little hiking, creek splashing and sleeping under the stars (well under a tent)!
Before we had children we could backpack to the top of the falls, hike on into the meadow and set up camp. We snickered at the huge family tents set up with air mattresses and some even had cots. We were too tough for that. Well here we are twelve years later and we drive up to the meadow and unpack our monstrous amount of stuff. We do sleep on air mattresses and have a huge tent.... no one want to sleep alone. Even with all "the stuff" it still is an outdoor adventure!
This week we were studying Jesus first recorded miracle in the Bible. Jesus was with his disciples and Mary, Jesus mother, arranges for this miracle to occur. We were trying to imagine what it would be like to hang out with Jesus and his group of twelve. Our middle son asked does Jesus laugh? We asked him what he thought and he said, "Yes, I think He does-he likes kids." We agreed.
I thought later about the group that followed Jesus. They really knew what was truly important. They travelled lite. I'll bet they did not have a big ol' Colman tent packed on their backs. In the Bible is says repeatedly, that they got up and immediately followed Jesus when called. It has me thinking.... Do I immediately get up and follow when Jesus calls me to action? Hmmmmm.
Dear God,
My hope is that one day You will say to me, "Well done good and faithful servant." Often times I fear I fall short of that goal. I selfishly plan out my day and I am slow to let go of my plans. I may grumble and complain about the many acts of service that I do for my family. That is not a true servants heart. Later I pray for forgiveness looking for ways I could have done better. I thank you for your grace and mercy, as You have already forgiven me. Lord give me the desire to IMMEDIATELY act when you call, saying, "Here I am Lord." And to act with an attitude of joy! In Jesus Name, Amen.

Do you have Paraskavedekatriaphobia?
The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia, a word derived from the concatenation of the Greek words Paraskevà (meaning Friday), and dekatreÃs (meaning thirteen), attached to phobÃa. I found this crazy word in the newspaper and then looked it up on dictionary.com.
The number 13 has never bothered me. I am not a superstitious person. This particular Friday the 13th is my Happy Birthday, so how could it be scary! I am 36 today!
In 36 years I have been many things. A child of God, a daughter, sister, cousin, friend, student, dancer, singer, camper, clarinet player, marcher, runner, dental insurance filer, dental assistant, babysitter, Hobarter (dishwasher), camp councellor, camp first aider, nursing assistant, Registered Nurse, diabetes nurse educator, cardiac nurse, Mrs, wife, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, youth leader, aunt, mother, Sunday school teacher -this list may go on and on over the course of time.
In our lifetimes God may call us to be many different things to many different people. We have the opportunities to touch lives everyday, everywhere we go. God has us placed where we are for a reason and a purpose. May I rise to the occasion, no matter how insignificant I may think it is, and make sure that I am shining the light of Christ to all I come in contact with.
Dear God,
Thank you for fun reasons to celebrate. Thank you for the friends and family that are such blessings to me! I thank you for the many hats you've had me wear and I look forward to future assignments as You will. Help me to seek out those who need to hear about You and to see Your light. May I be sensitive to those in need of prayer and comfort. Lord be with those who may be in despair. Let them feel Your love and purpose in their lives. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Whispering Winds
What a blessing to have a breeze while going on a walk with my dog. Yesterday morning I started the walk fretting about time and how to get everything done. We are a busy family, our cup overflows. My husband is going to start grad school in the fall and we are juggling ideas around about how we are going to accomplish this goal as a family. As I began my fretful walk my attitude was grumbly and I hoped I could heed the encouragement from Sonya's post to let things roll off- no need to fret.
While blowing off some steam physically my soul and mind became soothed and I could slow my fretting mind down enough to listen. The wind whispering through the trees; I felt more at peace. It made me think of Elijah looking for God in the hurricane strength winds, earthquake and fire but instead finding Him in a gentle whisper. I can not hear the whisper if I am busy fretting. I had to stop my inner dialogue of doubts and fears and allow myself to trust in my husband and in God. Things will all work together for good. We can do all things (the things that are important to God), as Christ will strengthen us and sustain us. I took many deep breaths and I thanked God for the promises we have in Him. We are not in this journey alone He is right there with us. I just have to stop my fretting so I can hear Him and receive the gift of peace.
Dear God,
Thank you for the cooling breeze today. May I continue to turn to You, as You are in control, instead of fretting. Thank you for the gift of your peace. Lord, please surround all mothers and fathers today. May they feel the comfort in knowing how much You love them and give them peace in knowing even when things are hard You are there. Ease their burdens, make them seem lite. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Doughnuts for Dad

Doughnuts for Dad was the theme for this morning at my son's elementary school. All of the dads come to have doughnuts and coffee with their kids. (Thankfully the kids do not have coffee). It's a time for the children to honor thier dads. My boys enjoy this event even more than the Muffins for mom morning. Having Daddy come to school with them is, well....., extra special.
I smile as I reminisce about our parenting journey. My husband went from a man who had never even held an infant to a dad who helped Dr H deliver our third child. My husband is an amazing dad.
He brings joy even to the mundane tasks of diaper changing and potty training. Many a happy dance has been done in the Patterson household over a job well done! Simple things that could have gone overlooked are celebrated and high fived. Nothing beats a high five from your dad!
Even though he would say differently he is patient; able to sit through, (I suspect he could be snoozing), long tea parties and aurduous math home work. He teaches the boys all about tools, cars, trucks and allows them to try thier hand at repair work.
He shows us all the example of helping a friend out in time of need. He volunteers at church, work, and in the community, showing us the importance of service to God by serving others. Yet he places importance on the time he has for his family, keeping it all in balance.
He puts the needs of his family above his own, which has been challenging, as he is young at heart and dreams of cars, motorcycles and the latest gagets. It is something I know he's had to pray about to keep in check.
He is very calm and reserved slow to anger and rarely yells, even though I do not realize it, he says that this takes incredible self control. Something else which he prays for.
We are very blessed, and tis the season for Happy Daddy's Day!

I am thankful today for the amazing man You have given to me. His love for You is evident in the way that he lives his life. His spiritual leadership, by example, is so beneficial to our family. Our children learn by watching him and it matches what he says. What a wonderful gift from You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
The fruit of the Spirit is the foundation of our life in Jesus Christ. When Jesus is at the helm these fruit are evident in everything we say and do! What fruits are in your basket?

Living Water Hydration
While grocery shopping for my family I focused on how to keep them hydrated. I bought grapes, watermelon, Popsicles, and Roar'in waters. I stocked our garage refrigerator/freezer with the Popsicles and the waters so that the boys could get to them while outside playing, and easily offer them to a buddy, who also may be in need of a cool drink. I am ready now for the heat of summer.
Our bodies are about 70% water. It is reccommended to not go more than three days without water, however we can survive approximately 8-14 days depending on our size and output. Water is crucially important for our survival.
It got me thinking about "living water" hydration. Jesus talks about the living water in John 4:1-26.
I think that Jesus is telling us that the Holy Spirit is the living water and is essential to our survivial, just as water is to our physical survival. In order to have this living water we must develop a relationship with Christ by spending time in prayer and in His word.
The living water that Jesus offers, gives us wholeness, peace and eternal life. To drink now from Jesus’ teachings is to have the well of God in our very being. As our thirst begins to be quenched, the spring of God flows out to the broken around us, drawing others in to have a drink!
Dear God,
We thank you for the gift of Your Son, who taught us how we should live out lives. Allow us to drink from Your Word until we are quenched to overflowing so that others can be drawn in to You. Give us courage to share what You are doing in our lives with others, so that they may have the give of salvation that only You can give. In Jesus Name, Amen.

An Attitude of Gratitude
To promote an Attitude of Gratitude this week we, as a whole family, are going to keep a gratitude journal. Each day this week we are going to write down the things we are thankful for. (My youngest will have to color a picture.) During our evening meal, while we are all together, each family member can express something that happened that day for which he is thankful. It can be something serious or something funny that brightened our day. I am hoping this will make us more aware of what God is doing in our lives and the many ways he blesses us. May we be overflowing with thankfulness!
Dear God,
We have so many things to be thankful for but in our business and selfishness we miss out on thanking You for so many of our blessings. Lord, I do not want to miss a single blessing You have given. Jolly, Jolly Ranchers!
My youngest son graduated from Kindergarten! His teacher had a special program for the families to come watch. She brought each child up individually and spoke of the gifts each one exhibited throughout the year, how each child was special, and how they contributed to the class. She also gave each child a candy that went along with their character traits.
I had no idea this day would make me sentimental and teary until we were there and she began to share what each child meant to her over the year. When my middle child's turn came he bounced up front to his teacher. She began to talk about how he always came to class with a smile on his face ready for the days activities. He received the enthusiastic reward as he was always upbeat and ready to try new things. He beamed under this praise. I was smiling too, but also teared up as now he is done with this rite of passage- Kindergarten.
Earlier in the school year in a parent teacher conference she described my enthusiastic child as a risk taker, willing to try new things with no fear. He is our risk taker. Last summer he could barely make it across the swimming pool, yet he was determined to swim on the swim team. Swim he did, with a smile on, always, even though most times he finished last.* He did win one ribbon simply because there were only five swimmers in his age group and he came in fourth. After the race he said I swam faster that somebody! He was thrilled!
He is a Jolly Rancher! " Jolly" does describe this child!
This jolliness, joy, and enthusiasm could only come from God and we, our whole family, are so blessed by his gift! It keeps our whole family's attitude sunny!
*this swim season he has already shaved 20 seconds off of his time! Still smiling the whole time!
Dear God,
Immerse my children in confident hope as they trust in You with thier self worth. Thank you for wonderful teachers who recognize the gifts You have given each child. Surround thier relationships at school, church, the ball field and home with Your guidance and love. Continue to shine through them leading others to You. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Sunny Day Sack Races
Yesterday was field day at my sons elementary school. The events were all fun noncompetitive and light, over all, just a fun day in the sun! All of
the Patterson's were there to cheer on our participants. They had a traditional sack race; it is my all time favorite field day event! It brought back fond memories of field days long, long ago!

Some of the events were races, but not against others, only for your personal best. Other events required that you work together to reach the finish line. Some by carrying a ball between you and your buddy or to carry the ball between you and your partner's sticks or paddles, while walking to a distant object and back. It required teamwork.
My life is a bit like that. At times I am running with Christ alone, studying and trying hard to listen to what God is saying in His Word. All of the time straining towards the plans God has for me, so that I finish the race well. Other times I am running with, dear friends in Christ who are helping me, mentoring me, and working with me in a ministry or service. Together we are straining forward towards the goals Christ has for us. I am so blessed by a fellowship of friends who share what the Holy Spirit is doing and saying in their lives. These women have encouraged, challenged and held me accountable in my faith. Through them Christ has been molding and changing my heart over the years. They truly are stock piling treasures in heaven, and my soul is one of them, for that, I am eternally grateful.
Dear God,
I am so thankful for the people You placed in my life, who have lead me to You. Your love flows abundantly to me through the gift of friendships that You have given. These bonds that You have blessed are such a comfort in an ever changing, troubling world. Whether they live two houses down or many states away I am glad they are along on this race for the prize with me! In Jesus Name, Amen

God is Great and Good
My oldest son plays the guitar. Actually he and my husband are learning to play the guitar. He can play many beautiful little numbers like, Ode to Joy, (my favorite) and Aura Lee. He and his dad also like to play some old rock songs from the '80s. He is learning Iron man by Ozzy Osbourne. The funny thing is my youngest, who is three hums this song- at times loudly. I am sure we receive some sideways glances in the grocery store. The very idea of a young preschooler humming such a song. I do not know the original lyrics so those sideways glances could very well be justified as this song could be extremely inappropriate. We replaced the words with a favorite dinner time prayer.
God is great and good

Positive Nickels
One night while tucking my children in bed I noticed a negative tone I had towards them. It seemed I only focused on the things they did not get right so it made the end of the day discouraging and off. I re-tucked them in to tell them the things I remembered that were great and right on!
At the end of this tiring day it seemed that I lost sight of the good and talked to them only about the bad. My children were doing their chores, but with prompting or do I daresay nagging. That's when I discovered it wasn't that they were not doing things right it was that when I nag (or prompt) it makes me cranky. So I had to come up with an incentive plan to try to keep us more on track.
We have not given a set allowance but we decided to give this a try. Each boy starts the day with one dollar in nickels. I keep them on the counter in two glass jars. If I have to remind them of a chore or tell them twice to do something instead of nagging I take a nickel from their jar and put it in another glass (so they can hear the clink). At the end of the day, before we have devotions I have them count their nickels. My oldest ended his first day with seventy five cents and my middle son with sixty five. I focused on how great it was they still had over half of their monies. They are excited about the probability of having money at the end of the week. I also think it will be helpful in teaching them about money management.
Dear God,
Give me an attitude of love and compassion as I encourage and disapline my children. May they know they are loved unconditionally no matter how they do thier jobs, but that a job well done is the goal to aim for. Remind me of the compassion and mercy You have given to me as I bring them up to be servants for You. In Jesus Name, Amen
Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things."

Colossians 3:21 "Fathers do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged."
Proverbs 10-17 "He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray."

Happy Birthday Patterson Princess
Today is our little girls third birthday! We love celebrating birthdays, and one day is not enough. We celebrate that family member the whole week. It is exciting for all of us! These three years have gone by so quickly. It does not seem that long ago my husband and I headed over to the hospital for her delivery. When we left my oldest said, "What a great day to have a baby." My youngest told everyone he knew, she was his little sister! The boys love their little sister very much.
They allow her to accompany them on their many back yard adventures. She may be one of the few three year old girls who know all about Star Wars and can duel with a light saber.
She cheers them on in their sporting events, sometimes yelling as loud as me! They have their moments but quickly forgive and are soon laughing again.
Today we are celebrating her third year with a Butterfly Birthday! Happy Birthday to you Patterson Princess!
Dear God,
Make our family a place where Your peace reigns no matter what the storms of life bring our way. Teach us to love each other and to honor each other in Your name. Help us to know what ever the dissagreement or differences we have, our love is strong enough to handle them. Remind us how precious this time is that we only have a few years to build this family so it will last for a lifetime of loving, supporting and being there for eachother. Protect us from taking each other for granted. May we have loving attitudes with eachother instead of gumbling and complaining. Lord keep us close to You, for if our focus is on You I know we will be on the right track. Thank you for the precious gift of our children! What a delight they are to us! In Jesus Name, Amen.

Covered by the grace of God day
Saturday was a "Covered by the grace of God day" for me. Mid morning, we realized our weekend plans needed to be changed. My husband needed to head down to NC to help out a friend, for a unexpected emergency. The kids and I headed out to the soccer fields for the last game day of our Upwards soccer season. On the way I started to fret. We were going to be late for my oldest son's game. Since it was the last game of the season and it was an award ceremony day, parking would be a challenge. Would I be able to find a coach, to replace my husband for my middle son's team? The anxiety was beginning to grow. I am a worrier by nature and I knew I needed to turn this downward spiral around so that it could be a good game day for the boys. I turned off the radio and asked the children to pray. My prayer went something like this. Dear God, Please be with Uncle B as he is in pain, please give him comfort and healing. Be also with Aunt J as it is frightening to see a loved one sick but even worse to be so far from home. Keep Daddy safe as he drives to get the rest of their family and bring them home. Help us to keep what's most important in our minds not the silly
trivial matters. You know though that the silly trivial matters are what are causing me worry. May I find a coach for the Mustangs. May both my boys feel your loving presence even though their Daddy can not be at their game. May we have an attitude of gratitude instead of disappointment as our day is not going the way we planned but in the way You needed it to be.
We did have to park in the most furthest outstretches of the parking area. My oldest ran on to his game that had just started. I loaded myself, pack mule style, with blanket for sitting on, backpack full of waters and snacks and we trudged on. I stopped by the information desk to report my coaching woes. The response was not favorable as both directors could not help with the Mustangs game. I did get the teams awards and headed to my oldest son's game. Once I got there things began to look up. A mom reported that when my oldest boy had arrived the whole team cheered! I even saw him score a goal before heading to my middle son's, the Mustangs, game. I started to get nervous because up until 5 minutes before game time not a single parent of a Mustang was in sight. Finally they began to arrive. I told them about our morning and they all rallied to make this game great! One of the dad's coached, and a mom made sure the children did not get to hot. The parents had gotten together a gift for my husband, an autographed by the team soccer ball. They had the children pose around it for a picture, since my husband could not be there to see them give it. The day all came together beautifully.
Dear God,
I thank you for the comfort and peace you offer when we pray. Prayer is a gift and the rewards afterward are life changing. I thank you for holding us all under your wing this weekend. I am thankful we are all home. I am especially thankful for the many people You shined through, showing me how much You love and care for us.
Romans 8:26-27 "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will."
Philipians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcend all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
I Timothy 2:1 "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone."
Uncle B and Aunt J are home with the rest of their family. He is doing better. :)

Risky Business
My oldest, who is only eight, recently asked a very serious question. A question that I for one have been dreading.
"Mom what does sex mean?"
As I tried to hold back my gasp. I was thankfully saved by my husband who answered the question quickly, and bluntly.
"That is how babies are made and I will be glad to discuss it with you later on tonight."
We were getting all three of them ready for bed and we hoped this would not develop into a full family discussion.
Later on that evening he confessed,
"That's not what the dictionary said."
I am thinking, that we could be in trouble here, but inquired on,
"What did the dictionary say?"
As I am mentally preparing myself for the worst, he said,
"It means if you are a boy or a girl." Of course I was relieved and happily replied,
"Yes, yes that is exactly what it means!" We should have started with,
"What do you think it is?" but we are learning.
We went on to talk to him about how God planned families, starting with a covenant between a man and woman to love, honor and cherish each other for their whole lives. If God so willed, He would give them children to love. Requiring that they teach the children about God.
I think he was bored by this point, as that was not the aim of his question in the first place. I learned some valuable lessons from this encounter. Be prepared for any and all questions and to ask a few probing questions of my own, to better discern how much information he needs for his age.
Dear God,
Help me to be the influence my children need at every stage of their growth. Keep me willing to listen to thier questions and concerns. May I pause, even if interupted, to listen as they may not feel brave enough to ask again. Bring to my attention any morally inaccurate information they may have recieved from peers. May my children feel my door is always open for communication. Do not allow me to neglect praying for them daily, requesting protection, wisdom and for discernment for You will in their lives. In Jesus Name, Amen

Ephesians 6:4 "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." (NIV)
Genesis 1:27 "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
